How to Find Preppers in Your Area

Whether you are looking to join a prepping group or simply want to know who is out there, finding preppers in your area can help you be more prepared. There are a few schools of thought on prepping and the strengths and vulnerabilities of joining a group.

Rather than get into a long debate on which school of thought is right or wrong, we are just looking at the impact of finding preppers in your area and not necessarily joining them. The methods that you use to find preppers in your area are pretty easy, and the internet makes it even easier.

Contents (Jump to a Section)

This post has been updated from our original How to Find Preppers post that was first published in 2017. We keep our content updated as the world around us changes, as we learn new skills and techniques, and (of course) when new ways of finding like-minded preppers show up.

Prepper Groups

Preppers talk a lot about self-reliance, but on the other hand, humans are unavoidably social creatures. This often leads to the debate of solo, isolationist preppers (known as lone wolves) compared with social preppers that seek out mutual assistance groups (known as MAGs).

This works best with a community that you trust well and have a long history with- usually family. Some people have success stories with strangers, but those are few and far between.

The Prepper Group Mentality

Finding other preppers in your local area is beneficial for those who embrace prepping as a group. If you are planning to stay in a small family group or would shack up with strangers during a disaster, you are embracing a group mentality. Strength in numbers and shared resources are all huge benefits when SHTF, so groups tend to win the majority of preppers.

Those unprepared for disasters may not realize it, but they will need to rely on groups for survival. The groups may be different than prepping groups, however, since they will likely be relying on regional and national aid (State and Local Emergency Management and FEMA).

Finding preppers in your area is especially important for groups prepping in advance to increase their numbers and boost their resources. Being active in a group can make you much more prepared as an individual and less of a liability to the group.

The Lone Wolf Mentality

The lone wolf prepper is less common and sort of glorified by the survival community. The idea of an individual making it on their own is admittedly badass. TV shows and movies have contributed to this idea by demonstrating how difficult it can be, such as the Discovery show Alone. Make no mistake; being 100% self-reliant is one of the most powerful skills a prepper or survivalist can possess.

You cannot argue that the road is much more difficult alone than with a group, though. One of the biggest benefits of being a lone wolf is the ability to blend in easily and avoid confrontations- a luxury large groups do not have.

Finding preppers in your area is important for lone wolf survivalists so they can monitor group statuses. Think of lone wolves as satellites orbiting the planet that is the large group in their area. If the group meets a catastrophic situation, it probably does not bode well for lone wolf preppers in the area.

Another benefit for lone wolves is to keep learning from these communities before SHTF.  Just because they don’t plan on joining them in an emergency doesn’t mean they can’t continue to stay up to date on the latest survival techniques, equipment, and tactics. They won’t be sharing much to protect themselves, but they can still glean information from a group discreetly.

Where to Find Other Preppers

You can find preppers in your area easily and through almost any situation. Stumble into someone at the hardware store, or at church, and realize you have the same views when it comes to preparedness. You can find a group online or on a forum to join or just listen in and learn. We don’t think it’s ideal to broadcast your prepper intentions to the entire world (for OPSEC reasons), but that doesn’t mean you have to hide.

Even here at TruePrepper, where we are attempting to make prepping more mainstream and accessible to everyone, we don’t tell every single one of our friends how much food, ammo, and survival gear we have and where. OPSEC sometimes outweighs the need to share, so keep that in mind when you are looking for new prepping friends and start talking specifics.

Find Preppers Around Town

We touched on it earlier, but finding people with the same interests as you locally can sometimes be just as easy as getting out there and meeting people. Churches, clubs, and many other hobbyist groups can all tie into prepping and may have groups already sorted out that you can join. Neighborhood watches sometimes even have disaster groups that establish communication trees and responsibilities at the very least.

Get out there, shake a few hands, and make some new friends. You may find someone that you can share prepping ideas with, or an entire group. If you have any prepping and survival hobbies that you enjoy with others, talking about preparedness naturally in conversations can be one way to break the ice.

There are also occasional prepper expos, camps, and festivals that might pull through your area every once in a while. When they are being held locally, it might be worth your time to stop in and see what they are about. Here are the top 10 prepper expos and a few more worth checking out.

Find Preppers Online

The internet has made it possible to meet anyone with almost any interest instantly. Sites such as MeetUp can allow you to meet those with the same interests. Social media groups can work as well, but you lose some anonymity when you use them to interact with others.

When approaching large groups, be sure you learn more about them before you give too much information about yourself. You want to vet the group and make sure they ‘have their act together’ and will not be a mess when disaster strikes. Unfortunately, there are also scammers and ‘groups’ just looking to sell timeshares in survival properties as well- so be ready to recognize those as you see them.

Localized Facebook Groups

The best way to find prepper groups on Facebook is to go to your Facebook Groups feed and type “prepper [city/county/state]”. Almost every metro area has a prepping group already, and certainly every state has a Facebook group page. You can see their member count and how active they are with the posts per day, and decide whether you want to jump in or not.

Discord Groups

The prepper groups on Discord can be smaller and tougher to track down- they aren’t publicly accessible through search, and you’ll need an invite key to make it in. Still, many people love Discord and their Discord groups, so you might find a home there, too.

Reddit

Reddit is less about community and more about information sharing- regardless of how it’s billed. We no longer post our RSS feed to Reddit, since spammers started using it for SEO. We still participate in the larger subreddits, though, like r/preppers and r/prepping.

It’ll be tough to find a group through Reddit, but if you are looking for preppers in general or to contact one, they are likely to be part of the 680K+ accounts that sub to those two subreddits I mentioned.

PrepperNet

One of the largest groups (and a big subsection of MeetUp) is PrepperNet. PrepperNet is a website similar to Discord in that you become a member to view and participate in threaded chats. But they are also the fabric that many of the local groups put their tent poles under.

The large chat group is open and full of right-wing conservative chatter- not a criticism, but I do know that it can turn away many modern preppers. I would suggest that you seek out your local group and utilize the networking aspect of PrepperNet rather than just lurk in the online forum.

I used to advocate their network, but have since been inundated with spam and even pitched a ‘prepping deals’ ripoff site that soured my stance on them.

American Preppers Network

Not everything lasts forever. American Preppers Network (APN)- once a huge, popular, and widespread group- is now reduced to an AI-run, meme-riddled Facebook page (not even a group). Create bonds that can outlast any online umbrella by providing true value, camaraderie, and compassion to your community.

Find Preppers By Volunteering

Volunteering has always been a great way to learn skills, share skills, and meet other people. We won’t beat a dead horse here- we’ve already covered this topic, so go check out How to Volunteer as a Prepper.

The big opportunity here is CERT- Community Emergency Response Teams. If you join your local CERT, you’re bound to be paired up with other preppers and positioned to help your community in a meaningful way.

Again, check out our guide to volunteering for a surefire way to find preppers if you have a local CERT program.

The Final Word

Finding other preppers is not that hard a task. Some have taken to using the comment section below, but remember OPSEC if you plan to join in.

Whether you stumble on other preppers by accident or go actively looking for them, prepping friends are an asset no matter your plans.

Hopefully, there is a group within a decent mileage/time factor for me. I am a veteran of 7 years and am beginning to prepare for possible “problems” with weapons, ammo, and some emergency supplies. We’ve wanted to do so much more and I was even starting the house buying Mattson marathon a couple years ago with the main idea of prepping. Then covid and it messed it all up and we’re stuck in a place where we can’t plant anything and have no space. If we can’t find people near, we would really just appreciate some guidance from actual people, not just sites ya know. Thanks in advance if anyone even considers. P.S. I’m one of those that cries at the National Anthem. I love this country and it breaks my heart to see it like this. Kind of partvwhy I’m new to this, didn’t see it being this close.

    • Greetings, Tory:

I am in Hardy County, WV and have a prepping Blog at Tumblr called prep4tomoro.

Pretty much, my blog describes my lifestyle so what you find there is what I am. Maybe you’ll find it helpful.

I live in a small rural WV community and have ultra-rural (4WD) property not too far from my home.

Though we may not be close, just thought I would introduce myself.

      Best wishes.

  • You’re right John Smith. The most logical course of action for an TEOTWAWKI situation would be to take a pistol and put a single round right in your own head… I mean really, what are you sticking around for??? Though it must also be said people with modern combat experience may have to face adversaries without air support, a modern communications infrastructure, superior signals intel, and an almost unlimited logistics supply backing them up. So anybody with modern combat experience probably should be looking to make as many friends as possible perferably with the largest and most deverse array of skills and resources possible. Don’t you think?

I am currently in western MA, but looking for property in NH, hope to move up as soon as possible, God willing. If you’re interested, we could join forces and create a local/regional group. I have friends mostly in Merrimack, Grafton and Coos Counties who are teaching self defense and survival skills, etc. Some are military vets, some are engineers, they run the gamut on skillsets. But as far as I know, there is no official group, just good trustworthy folks helping each other out. We’re talking about doing a workshop on 2-way radios, HAM, CB, etc.

I can be reached at cleomewhiskers@protonmail.com where I can share more.

My advice would be is to build a shelter with as much solid materials (brick, rocks, dirt, timbers, etc) around you as possible. Then stock it with enough food and water to last 6 months, plus any meds and sanitary means. Procure a Geiger counter that you can check when its safe to exit. don’t forget a battery radio and candles.

    • Chile is a great local for long term sustainment however, unrealistic for most as mobilizing yourself and your loved ones at a moments notice to go there from US would require really good forecasting. and only certain well off people would be able to achieve that transit prior to SHTF event.

Even if one was to reach Chile prior to US SHTF event, there is still an issue of Clean Water, and sustainment via crops, and sanitation.
but notably yes one would be better off there than at the epicenter of SHTF event.
As for me I have no ability to mobilize financially to another nation in the event. and Imagine most others do not as well. the only way I could see that being a thing is if a “Bed and Breakfast Motel” was set up years prior and in that you could screen those who may have good moral merit to relocate there in the event, as you would be able to rely on certain people to settle and contribute to the betterment of the community upon arrival. you need to think about who your “clan” / neighbors will be. Do not email as I will not answer its a shelled Email address. All coms will be public.

    • SHTF event…. get away from the plant in the south east and get out of SC move north west as the jet stream pushes (usually) from that direction and the lack of ….. emotional intellect from the college area via lack of experience will make acts of desperation a problem for you. Yes there is several networks, but are rather clandestine… they don’t act as a collective hive but more a loosely fitted cog, fully detached and independently acting in small cells, I checked in on them a year ago and they have alot going on in the city north of you starting with S. As they are fully aware of the potentiality of Opfor threats that infiltrate information streams like this one. What information do you need to know? They also have a few offroad SUV, rifle, and fishing clubs attached as well if I recall (the 2019-2022 situation has has kinda degraded those clubs though). Good honest people over there. I stay in contact annually with them.

  • I will not be an identified person in this communication chain, as I have things well built on my end, however….I do want to add to the knowledge archives and sharing (I want to see success with little to no loss of life; innocent or otherwise) as I do know how certain things work and how certain ideas/things do not work….Very similar to Mr. Collins background relevance. I have a background in Engineering as an ME/CE/EE through experience in my field of work in medical device over the last 26 years as a now senior technician, am military oriented from early youth and later being prior service. I believe in tactician of “planning for the worst, hoping for the best”. After doing extensive intellectual “recce” or “recon” I have forecasted that the most likely SHTF scenario will be several degrees less than what most believe will be or are planning for ( but should still plan one should plan and stage for long term sustainability and safety)… with situational exceptions. Humans being the 90% of the variable of that ideology previously stated.

General concept to start is the skills of self sustainment without currently known luxuries…IE- electricity, “clean” water on demand, heating, cooling, nutrition, sanitation, environmental contaminants like aerosol toxins/irradiated particles in PPMs…..all of which can be mitigated and or managed completely with the right knowledge and or precautions for long term sustainment. but thats not the full story as the most flexing and straining bandwidth you will observe is that of the first couple weeks when everything is against you….and I mean everything….bug in or out you will be in dire straights….and many will not survive the extremes of a total SHTF situation, I my self have a very low chance of survival as well. again people are the biggest threat in the initial first weeks then tappers off as time goes on, as population falls. Sorry but realistic expectations creates a stable platform for new ideas. Lone wolves do not survive BTW based on conceptual doctrines of odds and general conduct of a solo persons, as simple as in concepts like if you are injured or ill you now rely on others to aid you but you have not established a network that can render aid to you as needed because your presence is not significant to any and your well being is not monitored for sustainment of life… good nature of humans is nearly non existent in general in the first months of a total SHTF situation, most so in high Pop./per square mile areas like inner cities and skirting suburbs. It is advised to have some degree of a small network to be a part of and to stay within a localized network.

This is just the tip of the iceberg in ideological concepts, as most of this info is fairly well known, in worst case scenarios. most likely though it will be regional civil unrest and not national or global collapse. But should not be discounted in severity or preparedness.

Right now, looking to join a prepping community in the Northern Arizona area.
My wife and I prepared for many years and now she is deceased. Right now, not looking to go Lonewolf.
Have MANY preps and I have 22 years in security.

Any Northern Arizona preppers out there that need another member with extensive prep items, knowledge, and extensive security experience.
Currently am a Lonewolf and do not want to stay this way for much longer.

  • Hello, I have been advocating and teaching emergency preparedness for over 60 years. I have 6 books in print from Amazon. My not-for profit, tax deductible origination Live Free USA is at AmericanSurvivor.org. I write for their American Survivors newsletter and teach classes in NW Indiana. I don’t do any of this for profit. Just trying to make Americans great gain (or at least safe). We have groups and members throughout the US as to original survival organization, We also support organizing and networking. We also work with the American Civil Defense Association at TACDA.org. Lets save the next generation.

  • I have been prepping for 20 + and have a nice homestead off grid with 15 acres, extremely secluded, solar and wind, full preservation systems, endless fresh water. Very healthy environment. Looking for someone with like interest as I spend most of my time there. Its a bug out dream. Please message me if you want to talk.
